Preparation for the Ancient Egypt Workshop

Thank you for arranging my ancient Egypt workshop for your school. There are a number of things it would be very helpful for the class teacher to do before my visit. Feel free to print this page if you wish.

1.             Please give the children a permission slip for wearing make-up. At the end of the workshop one boy and girl will be selected to wear Egyptian clothes, jewellery and make-up. A permission slip is provided here. First paste it into Word to add the date of the workshop and the name or logo of your school if you wish, then print and photocopy. There are two slips on the page. You may want to take photographs of the children who are dressed up at the end.

2.             During the day I will ask you to assign the crafts activities to pairs based on their abilities. On the web site I have rated the difficulty level of each task so you can plan this in advance if you wish (see below).

3.             If possible arrange for a teaching assistant, or any other adults, to be available to assist in the artefacts part of the workshop. This is to assist children who may be having difficulty making the objects. Since each pair will be making a different object, the more adults available the better (especially for younger children).

4.             Have a space ready at the side of the room for the children’s artefacts (there will be about 15 of them). A sign and other decoration will help give the impression of a museum display.

5.             Leave space on the wall for a poster display of all the papyrus messages that the children will write. This consists of 3 A2 sized sheets. I will need two capable children helpers to make this display and also to help me set up for the afternoon.

6.             Please ensure the following are present in the classroom on the day of the visit. If any of these items are not available, please email me and I will bring them.

Table at front of room for my own use Plastic table covers (if you require them for painting) - also please cover the tables in advance.
Overalls for painting Scrap paper (for practicing hieroglyphs)
Scissors (3 pairs plus one sharp pair)   Jars for water for painting (about 10)
8 sharp pencils  6 thick paintbrushes
Paint palettes (12 – with space for 6 colours)   Paper towels (for drying paintbrushes)

Also please have a cheque made out to Time Trips for £159 (or appropriate amount) ready by the end of the day.

I look forward to teaching your children about the wonders of Egypt. Please contact me if you have any questions.
